Matt is currently the FAL1 squash team captain at Falmouth Sports Club. Having had a competitive background in badminton, he took to the squash court for a new challenge on his 35th birthday.
In the four years that followed, he has played up through the ranks from no.4 in the 3rd team, to competing in high-string matches in the first division. He has also played for the county o35 team and has been runner-up in the Falmouth club squash champs for the past 2-years running.
He is also the Head Squash Coach at Truro School, helping the KS5 team to national victory, previously working under Tim Smith from Truro SC.
Matt’s sports coaching background as a whole has spanned the past 20 years. He founded Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving Club when he was 21-years-old, and was chair of the club for 10 years following this. He coached the nippers, youth and masters groups, helping the nippers and youth to become national champions and the club to be awarded the prestigious ‘Super Club’ award, for the best sporting club in the UK.
He is also a Level 2 Swim coach, previously directing in swim clubs across Cornwall and leading the performance swim coaching to New Zealand’s open water swim team for 12 months. He is also a qualified triathlon, athletics, surf life saving and taekwondo coach. He has 2x Ironman triathlon finisher medals and has ran 12 marathons.
His coaching philosophy mirrors that of GB Cycling’s ‘Marginal Gains’. Working towards a 1% margin for improvement in everything you do – those small gains combine to affect exceptional improvement.
Matt is a Karakal Ambassador.
