Club Squash Championships: Finals Day

What an exciting week of squash it’s been, culminating in a fantastic Finals Day at the Club Squash Championships last weekend! A full-house were there to watch it play out.

In the Junior Draw, there were some superb points and exciting matches from our fast-improving Development and Performance Squash players. Congratulations to Max, who successfully retained his title. Unfortunately, Jack had to withdraw through injury, but Coach Huw stepped in to give Max a competitive match.

In the Open Draw, 32 competitors battled it out, producing some fantastic matches and plenty of great squash throughout the tournament.

The final was eventually won by the experienced Rory Brickell, who claimed his 4th Club Championships title. An incredible achievement! Runner-up was Oscar Lambert, who, as one of the younger players in the draw, has plenty of time to develop and will no doubt be back next year with his eyes firmly on the trophy! 3-1 to Rory.

The Plate competition also provided an epic battle, with a few entertaining mid-court shots thrown in for good measure! It was eventually won 3-2 by Jon Hardwick, who also did a fantastic job organising the Championships, with the hard-hitting Matt Rogers finishing runner-up.

Women’s Social Squash Tournament – Event 2

Well done to the 22 players who took part in the second installment of our Women’s Social Squash Tournaments (9 play at Falmouth!).

Held at Truro Squash & Leisure Club, the day had a fantastic atmosphere, bringing together female players from across the region. With competitors divided into three groups, there was plenty of high-quality squash on display, along with clear progress and improvement since the last event.

A big thank you to Karakal Worldwide and Ridgeline Studio for their continued support, as well as the England Squash Community Fund for helping make the event possible.

A special mention goes to Abbie, the only junior in the line-up, who delivered an outstanding performance to take the Group B title.

While it’s always great to celebrate the winners, the event is about much more than results. It’s about encouraging more women to get involved in a sport that has traditionally had a much larger male presence—and creating space for players to enjoy time for themselves.

The feedback so far has been fantastic, and a turnout of 22 players is something rarely seen in recent years for squash in Cornwall. One participant summed it up perfectly:

“We spend 99% of our time doing things for others—work, family, and so on—and it’s so rare we get time to do something just for ourselves. So thank you for the opportunity to have a fun day.”

Results:

Group A
Winner – Louise S (Truro)
Runner-up – Viv C (Falmouth)

Group B
Winner – Abbie B (Truro)
Runner-up – Emma E (Truro)

Group C
Winner – Sally L (Falmouth)

Three club members picked for Cornwall

Three of Falmouth Sport Club’s squash players and coaches have been selected to play for Cornwall in the national inter-couties competition.

Jonny Newton, Matthew Stone and Huw Gibbon all made the line up against Devon and Gloucester, playing at the D+E club in Exeter. Also picked were Max from Newquay and Steve from Truro. They were against tough opponents, but everyone played well – each match being incredibly close. Huw got some super victories playing at 5th string!

Well done all!

Women’s Social Squash Tournament – Event 1

Seventeen women from across Cornwall came together yesterday at Falmouth Sports Club for a vibrant and inspiring Women’s Social Squash Tournament, a fitting celebration alongside International Women’s Day.

The event welcomed players of varying experience levels in a friendly and supportive environment, highlighting both the competitive spirit and the strong sense of community within Cornwall’s squash scene. Participants travelled from clubs across the county to take part in the social tournament, enjoying a day of exciting matches, encouragement and camaraderie.

The tournament was generously supported by Karakal, who supplied the prizes and giveaways, and Ridgeline Studio, who created the marketing for the event on a pro-bono basis. Thanks also to the England Squash Community Fund for helping to get the project off the ground.

Throughout the day, the standard of squash on display was excellent, with every participant showing determination and impressive skill on court. Just as importantly, the event created an opportunity for women involved in the sport to connect, support one another and celebrate their shared love of squash.

Feedback from players was overwhelmingly positive. One participant from Truro said:

“Another big thank you for organising yesterday — the feedback from the Truro ladies is amazing. We all had a great time, made some new squash friends and are all really looking forward to the next one. Thank you so much!”

Organisers described the tournament as a fantastic social occasion and a brilliant showcase of women’s squash in Cornwall. With only four women entering this year’s County Championships, the hope is that initiatives like this will help break down barriers and encourage more women to take part in the competitive side of the sport.

The event is the first in a new series of five women’s social tournaments taking place at Falmouth and Truro clubs over the coming months. For more information, visit the Cornwall Squash & Racketball website: https://cornwallsquash.co.uk/
