2025 Falmouth Sports Club Squash Championships

A couple of weeks ago we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of squash with the finals of the Club Championships. Two highly competitive matches rounded off this year’s tournament:

Main Cup Final: Jon Newton vs. Milan Escarcega
Plate Final: Tom Jay vs. Alan Pengelly

Congratulations to the winners – Jon, claiming his 4th title, and Tom, his 2nd plate – and well played to runners-up Milan and Alan.

For the second year running, the FSC Junior County Championship matches were sandwiched between the senior finals:

Final: Max vs. Jack
3rd/4th Play-off: Molly vs. Paddy

Both were exciting contests from our ever-improving crop of juniors. Congratulations to Max for winning and successfully defending his title and to everyone who took part in the event.

We had a brilliant crowd, so a big thank you to everyone who came along to support the players and make it such a great day.

Care for newly refurbished Tennis Courts

Now that tennis courts 1 & 2 have been refurbished we have been asked by the contractors to share with all members the Playmac Court Care that we should all observe.

We recommend that you follow these guidelines to maximise the effective life of the new Playmac tennis courts.

  1. Post-Construction – The surface will require time to cure during the first few months of its life. Normal use may be made of the court, but extra vigilance is necessary.
  2. Hot Weather Play – The courts will become soft in the first year following construction and should also be checked thereafter.
  3. Footwear – Do not use training shoes, running shoes, or footwear with rigid bars, studs, or sharp-edged soles. Black-soled shoes must not be used.
  4. Snow and Ice – Remove soft, powdered snow with a soft broom only. Never use metal shovels, scrapers, mechanical snow removal equipment, salt, urea, or other chemical de-icing agents.
  5. Bird Droppings – Remove immediately by washing with water. Prevent buildup by trimming overhanging branches.
  6. Surface Cleaning & Maintenance – Keep the court clean and free from leaves and debris. Do not allow organic matter to break down on the surface. Wash the court at least once a year with hosed water and mild detergent. Apply moss killer annually.
  7. Weeds – Maintain a vegetation-free zone of at least 2 feet around the external perimeter of the court. A weed killer has been applied during construction, but new growth should be treated immediately.
  8. General Care – Keep cigarettes, chewing gum, petrol, oil, and solvents away from the surface, as they will cause damage.
  9. Equipment – Umpire chairs, seats, and other heavy objects should not be placed directly on the court surface.

Falmouth heads to the British Open

Last Thursday and Friday, a group of Falmouth and Cornwall squash players made the journey to Birmingham to witness the prestigious GillenMarkets British Open Squash Championships.

Held at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre from May 31 to June 8, 2025, this event is renowned as the “Wimbledon of squash” and attracts top-tier talent from around the globe.

The Cornish contingent represented clubs from Truro Squash & Leisure Club and Falmouth Sports Club

They had the opportunity to watch quarterfinal matches on June 5 and 6, featuring world-class players like Nouran Gohar and Diego Elias, who ultimately clinched the women’s and men’s titles, respectively.

During their trip, they also made time for a king of the court squash hit and a game of Padel at Sutton Coldfield Squash Club, adding an extra layer of fun and camaraderie to their squash-filled weekend. The experience proved to be both inspiring and memorable, ‘fueling’ their passion for the sport (in more ways than one)!

Liz wins the British Racketball Open!

On the 5th and 6th October the British Racketball Open took place at Hallamshire, Sheffield. Falmouth racketball player, Liz Arnell, took part in the Ladies O60’s, reaching the final, and here is the match report:

Ladies O60’s Final: Sturgess vs Arnell. This was the first time the two had met with Arnell only recently starting on the UK-Racketball scene. Sturgess long having been the bane of any challenger in the O60’s category went in as favourite, but who knew what the Cornish player had to offer!

As it turned out the Helston based left handed player provided a big upset, taking down the top seed 3/1 in a very close final, the 4th going to 17/15 in her favour. A great win in her first UK Racketball Major.

Well Done Liz, a fantastic achievement!

Falmouth Sports Club Exhibition Night

It was a full-house at Falmouth Sports Club for the World Class squash event featuring Mostafa Asal, Marwan ElShorbagy, Peter Marshall and James Snell.

The superstars (plus Jonny and Martin) have been introduced and Peter vs James on court now!

Well done to Tim and Shuv for organising a fantastic event for Cornwall.

Jonny and Martin have played the pros. Now Marwan and Mostafa warming up on court 1.

That’s a wrap. Well done all for attending today – what an atmosphere!

Thanks to Falmouth Sports Club committee, the sponsors, the pros and players, the commentators and of course Tim Smith for organising another super exhibition in Cornwall.
